Antique American Federal Sheraton Southern Inlaid Cherry Chest of 5 Drawers

Made in USA circa 1815–1825.

Approximately 45 1/2" High × 42 1/4" Wide × 20 3/8" Deep.

American Federal/Sheraton inlaid chest of drawers, dating to approximately 1815–1825.

This handsome early 19th-century chest is constructed in what appears to be cherry as the primary wood with lighter secondary woods and displays refined Federal-period cabinetmaking details throughout.

The chest features a classic two-short-over-three-graduated-long-drawer configuration.

The front is framed by finely reeded pilasters with contrasting lightwood inlaid accents, while each drawer retains a pointed lightwood keyhole escutcheon.

Oval brass bail pulls complement the restrained Federal design.

The lower case terminates in a shaped apron and four turned feet.

Construction details include hand-cut dovetailed drawers, solid wood drawer fronts, traditional wooden drawer runners and substantial frame construction.

The sides are paneled, and the back is constructed with broad vertically oriented solid wood boards set within the rear framework.

Period-style iron drawer locks remain present. The brass pulls appear period appropriate and may be original or early replacements; originality has not been definitively established.

The chest has several characteristics associated with Southern Federal/Sheraton furniture, particularly examples from Tennessee, Kentucky and the broader Upper South: the probable cherry primary wood, tall proportions, reeded front pilasters, contrasting lightwood inlay, paneled case construction, shaped skirt and four turned feet. Closely related Southern chests are known with cherry primary woods and poplar secondary woods. These features make a Southern origin a meaningful possibility; however, the secondary woods have not yet been conclusively identified and no maker or specific regional school has been established. It is therefore offered as American Federal/Sheraton, possibly Southern, rather than with a definitive Southern attribution.

Excellent antique condition consistent with approximately two centuries of age and use. Surface shows expected scattered scratches, marks, abrasions, color variation and wear. Interior drawer and case surfaces exhibit age, some small holes, oxidation and use wear. A split is visible to an interior/lower structural rail, and there is evidence of minor old adjustments/repairs associated with the drawer runners. Locks are present; keys are not included.  Moving/inventory labels remain on the rear of the case. Please review photographs for additional condition details.
