Antique Rookwood Pottery #2655 Owl Bookends Blue-Green High Glaze

Made in USA 1927.

Each approximately 6" High x 3 7/8" Long x 3" Wide.

Exceptional matched pair of antique Rookwood Pottery owl bookends, shape no. 2655, produced in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1927.

The sculptural design is attributed to William Purcell McDonald for Rookwood Pottery; these examples are not artist-signed by McDonald.

Each bookend depicts a stylized wise owl perched on a molded book-form base.

This pair is especially notable for its rich variegated high-gloss glaze, transitioning through yellow-green, olive, green, teal, blue-green and deeper blue tones, particularly around the heads and eyes.

The translucent mottled glaze gives the modeled feathering and facial details considerable depth and distinguishes the pair from more uniformly glazed examples.

Both pieces bear the impressed Rookwood RP flame factory mark, Roman numeral date code XLII for 1927, and

Very good antique condition. One owl has slight flea bite to right ear on the outside edge near the top. No other chips, cracks or repairs observed. Both retain a rich glossy glaze with extensive age-related overall crazing and minor glaze/firing irregularities, including scattered tiny pinpoints/inclusions consistent with manufacture and age. Protective felt pads and remnants of earlier pads or labels are present on the undersides. Please review photographs when added for surface details.

Shipping: Recommended shipping box approximately 12" x 10" x 10". Estimated final packed weight approximately 7 lb. Each bookend should be individually wrapped with substantial cushioning and separated within the carton.
