Antique 19th Century Mahogany Document Storage Box with Brass Lock
Made in America or England c. 1850-1890.
Approximately 8" High x 15 3/4" Long x 9 1/2" Wide, including projecting base.
Antique mahogany or mahogany-type hardwood document and valuables storage box, likely dating to the mid-to-late 19th century, circa 1850–1890.
This substantial rectangular box features a hinged overhanging lid, traditional dovetailed corner construction, a molded projecting base, four round metal feet, recessed brass hinges, and a brass mortise lock with shaped keyhole escutcheon.
The interior is plain, unlined wood, suitable for storing papers, correspondence, keepsakes, or personal valuables.
Inside the lid is a later, modern adhesive label with a handwritten notation interpreted as “Oct 1, 1891 / Note from BC Girls / for $559.00 at 6% int.” The inscription's reading and historical connection to the box are unverified; the sticker is not an original nineteenth-century inscription and is not proof of the box's date or provenance.
Excellent antique condition with scratches, scuffs, patina, finish wear, and age-related marks throughout. Traditional dovetail joints and fittings visible in photographs. No obvious major structural damage in supplied images; feet and hardware originality not verified. Brass lock present; key not yet confirmed and lock function untested. Please examine all photographs carefully as part of the condition description.
