Antique French Gilt Metal Rococo Revival Jewelry Casket with Hand Painted Portrait Miniature under Domed Glass.
Made in France c. 1890–1920.
Approximately 2 1/2" High x 9" Long x 6 1/8" Wide.
Elegant antique French Rococo Revival jewelry casket with an unusual shaped, serpentine-outline lid, richly ornamented gilt-metal surfaces, and a central oval portrait miniature displayed beneath domed glass.
The lid is detailed with applied foliate scrolls, floral motifs, finely patterned grounds and rope-twist borders. The sides feature scrolling acanthus decoration, and the casket rests on four rounded metal feet.
The hand painted portrait depicts a lady wearing an elaborate lace-trimmed gown inspired by 18th-century aristocratic fashion.
The casket is stamped FRANCE on the underside. Constructed of gilt metal, possibly brass, with applied decorative components; the exact alloy has not been tested.
The lower compartment retains a rose-colored textile lining. The original covering or lining inside the lid may be missing, revealing the underside of the gilt-metal lid, retaining tabs, and the portrait mount. A loose piece of Bon Marché Seattle cardboard was found inside the lid.
Excellent antique condition with age-related wear, scratches, scattered tarnish/discoloration and oxidation to the gilt-metal finish. The rose-colored lower compartment lining remains in place with age-related wear. Please review all photographs as an important part of the condition description.
