Antique Pierre Granet (1843-1910) Bronze Sculpture
Made in France.
Approx. 5 3/8" High.
This piece is a classic patinated bronze sculpture depicting theatrical characters from the Commedia dell'arte, a form of professional theatre that originated in Italy and became immensely popular across France.
Figure on the left depicts Pierrot (or a similar sad clown/mime character), recognized by his large, distinct ruffled collar (ruff), loose jacket with prominent pom-poms or large buttons, and downcast posture.
The dynamic figure on the right represents Harlequin (Arlecchino) or Brighella, captured in a lively, animated theatrical pose with a raised arm and a kicking leg.
It embodies the French 19th-century or early 20th-century theatrical revival style, which frequently celebrated the whimsical, tragicomic themes of traditional street performance and carnival culture.
Cast in bronze with a dark brown patination, mounted on an integrated rectangular bronze base featuring a cross-hatched or diamond-quilted geometric pattern mimicking stage tiling.
Hollowed-out construction with the central brass threaded rod and nut is typical of late 19th Century French bronze castings. Figures like this were typically cast using the lost-wax or sand-casting method, then mounted to their bases using this excact type of hardware.
Excellent antique condition. No breaks or repairs. Normal patina for age of figure.
