Antique English Edwardian Mahogany & Satinwood Marquetry Oval Occasional Table
Made in England c. 1900.
Approximately 23 3/4” High × 31 1/4” Long × 18 1/2” Deep.
An elegant English Edwardian oval occasional table dating to circa 1895–1910, executed in mahogany with fine contrasting string inlay and a striking central radiating fan or sunburst marquetry patera.
The oval top is surrounded by a raised molded gallery edge and decorated with delicate perimeter stringing.
At the center, an elongated oval marquetry reserve is composed of individually radiating segments in a lighter contrasting wood, creating a dramatic sunburst or fan effect against the richly figured mahogany ground.
The restrained neoclassical decoration reflects the renewed interest in late 18th-century Sheraton and George III design during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
The table is raised on four slender square tapered legs terminating in blocked/spade-form feet.
Beneath, the legs are joined by an especially attractive shaped intersecting X-form stretcher with broad serpentine curves, providing both structural support and a distinctive decorative element.
Examination of the underside reveals traditional period construction, including a solid secondary-wood foundation beneath the veneered top, an independently constructed oval frame/apron, wooden leg blocks secured with old slotted screws, and traditional joined stretcher construction.
Surface oxidation, shrinkage, wear and patina to the underside are consistent with the table's age.
Old chalk inventory/dealer markings, including a large “709,” remain on the underside, together with later inventory/price labels. No maker's mark has been identified.
The combination of mahogany, contrasting marquetry, fine stringing, tapered legs and shaped cross-stretcher is characteristic of high-quality English Sheraton Revival furniture produced around the turn of the 20th century. The unusually large central sunburst and flowing X-form stretcher make this a particularly decorative example of the form.
Excellent antique condition with age-appropriate surface wear, minor marks, variations to the finish and patina consistent with more than a century of use. The underside retains old chalk inventory/dealer markings and later labels. Please refer to photographs for additional condition details.
