Antique Rare English Sheraton Revival Mahogany & Marquetry Circular Pivoting-Center Games Table

Made in the 19th Century.

Approx. 30” High × 34” Diameter.

A rare and highly unusual English circular games or card table in the Sheraton taste, finely constructed in mahogany and richly decorated with contrasting floral and neoclassical marquetry.

The fully circular form is supported on four square tapering legs embellished with descending bellflower or husk inlay, while the circular frieze and top are decorated with ribbon-tied floral swags, garlands, stringing and contrasting lightwood inlay.

The most distinctive feature is the table's ingenious mechanical gaming mechanism. The outer circular portion of the tabletop remains stationary and is permanently supported by the four legs. Within it is a large inset circular marquetry center panel mounted on opposing pivots.

Pulling the central release handle disengages locking catches at the sides, allowing this inset center to rotate vertically on its axis and reveal the circular green-baize playing surface beneath.

The center panel remains permanently captured within the table rather than being removed, folded over, or simply hinged upward.

This unusual mechanically released pivoting-center arrangement is considerably less common than the conventional fold-over, Demilune, removable-top and tilt-top forms encountered in English games furniture.

The decorative vocabulary—including ribbon-tied floral garlands, bellflower or husk drops, fine stringing, figured mahogany and square tapered legs—is strongly associated with the English Sheraton tradition and later high-quality Sheraton Revival cabinetmaking. In the absence of a maker's mark or definitive construction evidence establishing a narrower date, the table is conservatively catalogued as 19th century.

A separate circular glass top accompanies the table and provides protection for the marquetry surface during display and everyday use.

Materials consist of mahogany, contrasting lightwood marquetry and inlay, brass hardware, green baize; separate protective glass top

Excellent antique condition consistent with age and use, with expected surface wear, minor losses and age-related marks. The green baize shows some light staining and wear. Please refer to the detailed description for the unusual mechanical construction.
