Rookwood Pottery Floral Matte Glaze Vase by Sallie E. Coyne
Made in America 1926.
Approximately 6 3/8" high × 2 3/4" diameter.
An exceptionally attractive example of American art pottery, this elegant Rookwood Pottery vase was hand-decorated by Sallie E. Coyne (1876–1939) in 1926 at the celebrated Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The vase features a graceful, elongated cylindrical form with a beautifully restrained floral decoration encircling its upper portion.
Stylized blossoms in soft reddish-rose and muted terracotta tones emerge from an arrangement of rich green leaves and delicately rendered foliage.
The decoration is skillfully composed against a warm ivory-beige matte glaze, creating a harmonious combination of naturalistic detail, subtle color, and refined simplicity.
The gently modeled shoulder transitions into a slender, uninterrupted body, allowing the decorative floral band to serve as the principal visual focus.
The understated matte surface beautifully complements the botanical subject matter, giving the vase a quiet elegance characteristic of Rookwood's distinguished artist-decorated pottery of the early twentieth century.
Sallie E. Coyne was among the skilled decorators associated with Rookwood Pottery, contributing to the firm's celebrated tradition of individually hand-painted ceramic works. Her floral designs reflect the artistry and craftsmanship that established Rookwood as one of America's most important producers of fine art pottery.
The underside bears the impressed Rookwood flame trademark, the Roman numerals XXVI, dating the piece to 1926, and the impressed shape number 952F. Coyne's hand-painted artist's cipher further identifies this as an individually decorated work.
