Original small-scale figurative portrait painting signed “Stavast” at the lower right, attributed to American artist Stephen Stavast.
The work depicts a woman’s face emerging from a warm reddish-brown field, rendered in a stylized modernist manner with an expressive, almost surreal quality.
The painting is presented in a substantial period gilt-finished wood frame with a wide warm tan suede/velvet-like liner and narrow gilt inner molding. The original-style presentation gives this diminutive painting considerably greater visual presence when displayed.
Stephen Stavast began painting professionally in 1967 and his early artistic output included portraiture, surrealism and fantasy in addition to the landscape and realist subjects associated with his later career. Based on the presentation, materials and stylistic character, this work is believed to date to approximately the late 1960s–1970s.
Excellent vintage condition. Age-related surface wear and patina to the frame and liner, including scattered marks, spotting, rubbing and finish wear consistent with age. The artwork presents well. Please review photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. The reverse retains older framing materials and hanging hardware. “5 x 5” is handwritten on the reverse, corresponding closely to the visible dimensions of the artwork, along with an additional old inventory or reference number.
